Prof. Dr. Kai Kresse bekleidet seit WS 18/19 eine "S-Professur" W3 ( = Sonderprofessur an einer außeruniversitären Forschungseinrichtung) für Sozial- und Kulturanthropologie muslimischer Gesellschaften des subsaharischen Afrika oder Südostasiens am Fachbereich Politik- und Sozialwissenschaften, Freie Universität Berlin. Die Professur ist gebunden an die Position eines Vizedirektors am Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient, welche Kresse seit August 2018 innehat. Zuvor war Kresse Associate Professor of African and Swahili Studies an der Columbia University.
