Iridescent Kuwait. Investigating the Image World of Petro-Modernity

Iridescent Kuwait. Investigating the Image World of Petro-Modernity

In her project, Laura Hindelang explores questions surrounding the (in)visibility of petroleum in the context of Kuwait's urban transformation and evolving urban visual culture in the mid-20th century. She draws evidence from a wide range of visual material such as aerial photography, urban master plans, commercial oil company brochures, photography, postage stamps, newspapers and illustrated journals. The analysis of historical images and written sources allows to unravel the practices that are at work to visualize, represent, and negotiate Kuwait's oil-fueled transformation in a transnational perspective. With her work she contributes to all three axes. In March 2019, she joined the Institute of Art History, University of Bern, as a researcher.
