Geographies of afterlife: the futurist imaginations in the lives of Muslim market workers in Moscow.
Accommodating all kinds of traders, workers, and beggars, the market halls in the Russian capital have been hetero-cultural laboratories of migrant, inter-identitarian relations and everyday space making. Increasingly they have also become racialised as "dark", urban places and the targets of racist violence. This project will examine how certain Islamicate imaginations of futurity, as afterlife, complicate, inhabit or interrupt the experience of racialisation and capitalist, spatio-temporal relations. Focusing on inconsistencies and everyday contingencies, this project will attempt to create an experimental space of dialogical knowledge production.
