Strategies for Changing Stages. Contemporary Arabic Theatre and Cultural Brokering in Germany
Strategies for Changing Stages. Contemporary Arabic Theatre and Cultural Brokering in Germany
Concerned about prevailing sentiments of incompatability between so-called Western and Islamicate societies, I am interested in spaces of entanglement and their transformative potential.
The theatrical experience enfolds in the space shared between actor and spectator and thus relies on a shared horizon of the two – or attempts to create new frames of viewing. I analyze theatrical performances as discoursive intervention, functioning as mirror (on prevailing dynamics), showcase (for counter narratives) and/or laboratory (for utopia of various degrees).
Against the background of the current debate on Islam and Migration in Germany, and learning from the current success of postmigrant theatre and the challenges in its reception, my PhD project is looking at transfer, translation and (re)presentation of contemporary Arabic Drama and Performance to German Stages.
