The Urban Studies Seminar, chaired by Ulrike Freitag and Nora Lafi (both Zentrum Moderner Orient and Members of EUME), will be continued in the academic year 2015/2016 with the theme “Refugees in the City”. It is held at the Zentrum Moderner Orient (Kirchweg 33, 14129 Berlin). The seminar will start on Monday, 2 November 2015, 5 – 7 pm with an introductory session by Ulrike Freitag and Nora Lafi on “Urban Studies and the Question of Refugees: Considerations on Historiography and Present-Day Challenge”. Two weeks later, on 16 November 2015, EUME Fellow Erol Ülker will speak on “Refugees, Foreigners, Non-Muslims: Nationalism and Xenophobia in Interwar Istanbul”.
The Urban Studies Seminar is a joint activity of the Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO) and EUROPE IN THE MIDDLE EAST –THE MIDDLE EAST IN EUROPE (EUME), a research program at the Forum Transregionale Studien, Berlin. It is part of the EUME research field «Cities Compared».
