Measures to contain COVID-19 disease

Limited re-opening of offices and libraries. Read on...

News from Mar 16, 2020

Freie Universität Berlin, together with other higher education institutions, supports the large scale efforts currently being taken in society to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus. We can do this by limiting social contact with others and thus reduce the risk of infection. Students at Freie Universität can greatly contribute to these efforts by refraining from coming to the university campus in person. Containment measures havefar-reaching consequences for teaching, studying, research, and administrative work. Please check the official information page of Freie Universität for the latest updates.

BGSMCS building: The building remains closed to the public, but offices have been re-opened at limited capacity. Staff and fellows are allowed back in their offices on a strict schedule. If you need to go to your office and have not yet been assigned to a time slot, please contact our managing director Lars Ostermeier. The team of BGSMCS is still partly working from home and can best be contacted via e-mail.

Teaching and events: The mandatory workshops for doctoral researchers will take place as online classes (e.g. via Cisco WebEx). Additional events have been cancelled until the end of July. We hope to host these lectures and book presentations later this year.

Reports and dissertations: As the managing director has informed all doctoral students via e-mail, the deadlines for mandatory reports and extention applications have have been prolonged. If you have questions on this issue, please contact the BGSMCS team via e-mail. For submitting your dissertation, please check with your faculty's doctoral sudents' office if you are allowed to submit digitally. Please also contact the doctoral sudents' office concerning a defense via web meeting.

Libraries: More and more libraries have taken safety precautions and are re-opening to lending books. For updates on the library openings, pleace visit the university library's web site [in German]. Working in the libraries or using the scan and copying mashines is still not possible.
