Jan Thiele is a scholar in Islamicate intellectual history. He came to CSIC in 2015 with a Marie Curie Intra European Fellowship, funded by the European Union’s FP7, to conduct the research project Travelling Knowledge in Medieval Islam. Since 2017 he holds a position as Ramón y Cajal Fellow. He is also the Principal Investigator of the research grant Reason and Belief: Theological Debates in the Medieval and Early Modern Islamic West, awarded by the Spanish Agencia Estatal de Investigación (2019–2021). In October 2017, he was Visitor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton NJ.

For his PhD Research, Jan Thiele was awarded with the scientific award of the Annemarie-Schimmel-Foundation for Islamic Studies. It was presented during the opening ceremony for the Deutscher Orientalistentag 2013 in Münster.
