Lecture by BGSMCS Alumn Dr. Dauda Abubakar (Department of Religion and Philosophy, University of Jos, Jos Nigeria)
Academic research conducted in universities has become a wonderful source of knowledge production, dissemination and a means of exchange of ideas in the world. In countries of Sub-Saharan Africa, ranking of universities have shown consistent decline in academic research (teaching and academic exchange) due to many factors affecting the universities. Nigeria is one of lowest in world ranking of universities. Nigeria appear to be a very complex country due to the negative influences of religion and ethnicity. In addition, northern Nigeria in particular is among places where academic researchers in universities are faced with the challenges of insecurity, persecution, lack of adequate funding and facilities as well as manpower, despite federal government’s effort to provide support, example are Tetfund and Needs. There are also internal difficulties facing academics and academic research in universities in northern Nigeria. These issues have produced adverse effect on academic research in northern Nigeria and have reduced the ability of academics to compete with the rest of the world.
