The Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies, Freie Universität Berlin, is holding an international conference to explore processes of exchange between various theological and the legal disciplines among Muslim scholars. The main concern is to examine the different ways in which theology and Sufism influenced jurisprudence, and vice versa. Papers presented investigate the nature and different features of the relation between theological doctrines and legal positions and also the impact of certain ideas on pertinent practices. To what degree, and in what ways did theological doctrines influence legal conclusions? Which aspects of theology had repercussions on which elements of jurisprudence? Were jurists keen to harmonize their legal and theological teachings? To what extent were jurisprudence and theology interdependent or clearly demarcated? Tackling these and other questions should allow a better understanding of the interaction between theological and legal aspects of Islam.
