The Calligrapher's Workshop by Natalia Duque Quintero

This film tells the story of my meeting with Professor Hamam, a retired calligrapher, in a Cairo in revolutionary turmoil. For one year, I visited him regularly at the workshop, near Tahrir Square, where he goes each day to "save the youth of his mind". This place is not just a workspace but is, rather, a place of exchange. While separated from the demonstrations and political debates shaking the capital, the daily life of the workshop, and its visitors, is nonetheless impacted by these events. Torn between conservative tradition and reforming ideas, we discover how the lives of the people we encounter continue in this troubled environment, how daily life is reinvented every day in a country at the turn of its history.
