Conference: "Mobile Muslim Professionals: Trans-regional Connectedness and (Non-State) Cooperation in Central Asia, Southeast Asia and the Middle East"

14.04.2016 - 15.04.2016

organisiert von Manja Stephan-Emmrich, zusammen mit Claudia Derichs (Philipps-Universität Marburg & Centre for Global Cooperation Research Duisburg) und Shirin Saeidi (Centre for Global Cooperation Research Duisburg)

Abstract:
Tracing the effect of Muslim cross-border movement and the subsequent connectedness has recently become a focus of a growing cross-disciplinary field of research. Many studies explore whether and how Islam as a religious tradition is compatible with the principles and ethics of capitalist market economy. Recognising that this traveling value will continue to shape international cooperation, recent researches address how Muslim moralities are arranged with neoliberalism by merging Islamic values to the existing field of research e.g. the influence of a state-led modernization, entrepreneurship in Islamic thoughts, relevance of Muslim values and identities in social engagement. However, one result of this cross-border mobility, namely the pursuit of new form of professionalism or professionalization that is religiously rooted, has yet to be investigated as a research topic on its own.

The workshop will merge the mobility turn in social sciences with travel theory and the ‘Islam-as-a-world-system’ or ‘network’ approach in Islamic and area studies. The underlying presumption of the workshop proposes that both concepts as well as practices of Muslim professionalism in Asia, the Middle East and beyond are being informed through multiple forms of cross-border movement and connectedness; likewise, Muslim professionals’ networks are shaped and facilitated through cross-border travel.
