Visiting Research Fellow, “Changing societies. New Frameworks for Societal Policies and Decision Making” Program, Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung (WZB) and Fondation Maison des Sciences de l'Homme (FMSH)/Collège d’Etudes Mondiales, Paris
Marta Arena holds a PhD in Comparative Law from University of Turin and she is writing the dissertation for her PhD in Social anthropology at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sceinces Sociales (EHESS) in Paris, after a new 28-month extensive fieldwork in Tunisia. She has been post-doc fellow at the Forum Transregionale Studien in 2012-2013 and visiting researcher at the BGSMCS in 2013.
Adopting a phenomenological approach based on collecting and recording life stories, her research has concentrated on the experience of women who are unwed mothers in Tunisia. In particular, her current research revolves around the question of women’s discrimination and the way women fail to be recognized as political subjects. At the BGSMCS Marta Arena is analysing the everyday violence against unwed mothers and their suffering as forms of gender-based and political structural violence, which imply their invisibility in the public and collective space. The focus on violence does not intend to cancel out love, care and affection towards them.
